ich bitte um verständnis für mehrfachzusendungen im rahmen von newsletters
und listenabonnements.

sg. kolleginnen und kollegen,

als observing member der CDFG (www.cdfg.org) freue ich mich, dich/sie zum
themenchat über character rendering und sonderzeichenverwendung in der
linguistischen praxis einladen zu dürfen (näh. s. unten). teuthonista wird
dabei beispielhaft im vordergrund stehen, soll aber nicht als einziges
transkriptionssystem abgehandelt und besprochen werden.

ziel des themenchats ist es, aufbauend auf der wieninitiative (benannt nach
dem ausgangsort der initiative; näh. s.
<http://wiki.cdfg.org/WienInitiative> http://wiki.cdfg.org/WienInitiative),
über die notwendigkeit von character rendering zu diskutieren. in der folge
soll ein characterset zusammengestellt werden, zeichen dokumentiert und bei
den entsprechenden gremien vorgebracht werden, um die benötigten zeichen in
UNICODE einzubringen.
in diesem sinne sind die benötigten zeichen analog wie die zeichen im rahmen
der wieninitiative zu dokumentieren.

ich würde mich freuen, wenn die scientific community möglist gut beim
themenchat vertreten wäre, um ihre anliegen vorzubringen.
ebenso wäre es wünschenswert, wenn sich möglichst viele institutionen /
projekte an der initiative beteiligen, um dem anliegen nachdruck zu
verleihen.

To members of the CEN/ISSS Cultural Diversity Focus Group,

As the first in a series of topic chats the CEN/ISSS CDFG invites to a chat
on Character Rendering on Thursday of this week.

The chat will take place at  <http://chat.budabe.de/>
http://chat.budabe.de/, chat room "cdfg". No software installation is
necessary to attend. The chat will be in "written mode" only. The chat
language will be English. When entering the chat, please identify yourself
with first and last name. The chat log will be saved.

To facilitate participation from the USA the chat starts at 1800 Central
European Summer Time on Thursday 8 May; that is 0900 Pacific Daylight Time.

Participation is open to all interested parties. Please feel free to forward
this information to colleagues who might wish to participate.

Part of the background for the chat is a Character Rendering meeting that
the CDFG arranged in Tallinn (Estonia) in April. That meeting formulated
some recommendations. We would like the chat to follow up on those
recommendations: possibly modify them, add to them, and propose follow-up
actions.

The recommendations have been circulated as CDFG document N299:

The following recommendations were developed at a special character
rendering meeting of the CEN/ISSS Cultural Diversity Focus Group.

Recommendations

Recommendations relating to Teuthonista:

1.      Draft background document describing background of Teuthonista,
along lines of that describing UPA.

2.      Update Wien Initiative to include all Teuthonista characters.

3.      Define a collection of pre-composed characters and named character
sequences for the Teuthonista.

4.      Circulate this in consultation with the CDFG to Unicode and/or
ISO/IEC JTC 1/SC 2.

5.      Initiate similar activities for other similar systems. (Two examples
are Landsmålsalfabetet and Storm for Nordic languages.) Cooperate
(definitely) or integrate (if feasible) the activities; it may possibly all
be called Wien Initiative.

Other recommendations:

6.      Create (preferably within the Unicode framework) a specification and
a repository for documenting context-specific rendering expectations for
characters and character sequences.

7.      Producers of rendering engines and fonts need to make use of
mechanisms based on IETF BCP 47 for the correct context-dependent rendering
of characters in accordance with users rendering expectations.

8.      For application developers, all users, etc.: Utilize language
tagging mechanisms to the greatest extent possible.
